IMACS Faculty

IMACS is all about providing young children with the opportunity to be taught by gifted people, experts in their fields who combine a deep understanding and love of the subject matter with a commitment to the education of our nation's most precious resource, our children.

So often, access to dedicated and exceptional professionals and academics does not occur until much later in a student's university career, but IMACS students have this priceless opportunity at a time in their lives when such contact can have the most profound effect.

Not only must new faculty members meet exacting professional standards that go far beyond those usually demanded of teachers at this level, they must also undergo extensive training that involves observing and working with the founders and creators of the IMACS curriculum:

Terry Kaufman BA, MA
President

A former manager at IBM and an experienced teacher of both the mathematics and computer science programs, Terry combines his love of mathematics with a total commitment to excellence in education. Terry is himself a graduate of the mathematics program used at IMACS and designed by his father, Burt, and was thus able to obtain his Bachelors and Masters degrees in just four years from The Johns Hopkins University. He now dedicates his time to ensuring that IMACS students have the same opportunity, namely, to excel in the mathematical and computational sciences.

Ted Sweet BS, MS, PhD
IMACS Director

As a high school student, Ted studied the Elements of Mathematics curriculum under the guidance of EM Director Burt Kaufman.  He attended the University of Miami, then went on to gain his PhD in mathematics from UCLA, after which he worked as a research mathematician for Bell Labs.  He now lends his considerable teaching and mathematical expertise to the task of IMACS Director.

Michael Lenzen BS, MS
Senior Instructor

Mike gained his Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering in 1980, and his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering in 1986. He is Lead Engineer for two-way radio product development for Motorola Inc based in Plantation, Florida. A dedicated, professional engineer, Mike loves to share his enthusiasm and considerable electronic expertise with bright young students. He teaches the IMACS Electronics classes, and within the IMACS Curriculum Development Group directs the curriculum development for the IMACS Electronics program.
